Driver jailed six months for stealing employer’s vehicle

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced a 37-year-old driver, Shola Oke, to six months in prison for stealing his employer’s Toyota Hummer bus valued at N20 million.
The Chief Magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi, summarily tried and sentenced Oke to six months at the Agodi Correctional facility after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The magistrate however gave him, following his plea for mercy, an option of paying a fine of N250,000.
Oke, a driver with Gazzu Nigeria Limited at Iyaganku GRA in Ibadan, was first arraigned on October 2.
He was arraigned for stealing the company’s Toyota bus with Reg No JJJ 646 GN.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Sikiru Opaleye, told the court that Oke reportedly parked the vehicle on the company premises at the close of work on October 2.
Mr Opaleye said, “He later went back to the company and drove out the Toyota Hummer bus, drove it to the Adegbayi area and hid it inside the forest and pretentiously returned to the office. But he later confessed to the crime when invited by the police.’’
He said the offence was a contravention of Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
