The Economic Financial Crimes Commission Chair, Abdulrashed Bawa Tuesday said some influential Nigerians have started threatening to kill him for doing his work.

Speaking on a Channels TV programme on Tuesday, Mr Bawa said corrupt people are fighting back with death threat to him.

Asked how true is the popular saying that “corruption is fighting back”, Mr Bawa said it is true that corruption fights back judging by the threats and pressure he was getting as the EFCC chair.

“Last week I was in New York as all Nigerians are aware and a very senior citizen received a phone call from somebody who is not even under investigation,” Mr Bawa explained. “What he said to him on phone was that he is going  to kill the EFCC chairman. The young man, I’m going to kill him.”

“That is to tell you how bad it is. And it is actually real, corruption can fight back”, Mr Bawa added.

Further asked if he meant he is directly getting death threats, Mr Bawa said, “yes”.

Peoples Gazette could not independently verify Mr Bawa’s claim, but he was handpicked for the anti-graft top job amidst uncleared questions of his past conduct bothering on corruption.

Mr Bawa’s corruption case was pending when Mr Buhari tapped him for the top job in February, apparently on the recommendation of Attorney General Abubakar Malami.
