Court remands Osun truck driver over alleged manslaughter

An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a truck driver, Adebayo Olayinka, at the Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly causing one Adebayo Tajudeen’s death due to dangerous driving.
The magistrate, Olusegun Ayilara, gave the order on Thursday and hinged his decision on “the magnitude of the offence”, allegedly committed by the defendant.
Mr Ayilara, who opposed the bail application by the defendant’s counsel, Oladipupo Olatunbosun, adjourned the case to December 23 for mention.
Earlier, the defendant had pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of manslaughter and dangerous driving, when the charge was read to him.
The police prosecutor, ASP Akintunde Jacob, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 19, at about 7:30 p.m at the Old Garage area in Osogbo.
Mr Jacob said that the defendant drove a Howo Sino Truck with Reg. No. SGB 961 XY, in a dangerous manner that led to Mr Tajudeen’s death.
He further said that the offence committed contravened sections 18 and 27 of the Road Traffic Laws (RTL), Vol. 11, Cap 146 and 548 of the laws of Osun, 2002.
