Ekiti LG boss warns residents against indiscriminate bush burning

The Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area, Bayo Omojola, has warned residents, especially youths, to desist from setting farms and bushes on fire during the dry season to hunt game.
Mr Omojola gave the warning during an interview on Thursday in Ikole-Ekiti, saying such acts could lead to greater havoc.
He also advised farmers to clear their farms and avoid setting it on fire to avoid environmental pollution and destruction of other resident’s properties.
He said, “We are getting closer to the dry season on a daily basis and the level of heat is increasing as well. I want to warn residents to desist from burning refuse in bushes, and setting bushes on fire. This act can cause environmental pollution and end up destroying other people’s property. I want to urge our farmers to be security conscious and careful in order not to destroy their farms as a result of bush burning. We are equally moving towards the season of heat waves and high temperatures and I feel it will be better if we sensitise our people to desist from indiscriminate burning,” he said.
Mr Omojola also urged environmental health officers to continue to sensitise residents to dangers inherent in indiscriminate bush burning.
