John Tinniswood, who held the title of the world’s oldest man, passed away at 112 on Monday, the Guinness World Records (GWR) said.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the GWR said Mr Tinniswood’s death was confirmed by his family, who disclosed that he had died at the Hollies Rest care home in Southport, England, where he lived.

Mr Tinniswood, born on August 26, 1912, in Liverpool, claimed the title of the world’s oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records in April this year after the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, the previous record holder.

Mr Tinniswood’s family revealed that his final moments were “surrounded by music and love”.

Meanwhile, before Mr Tinniswood’s death, GWR noted that they had inquired how he could live so long, but he had said “pure luck”, adding, “You either live long, or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”

However, Mr Tinniswood noted, “If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much; if you do too much of anything, you’re going to suffer eventually.”

He said that while he could not tell them how to live as long as he did, he advised younger generations to “Always do the best you can, whether you’re learning something or whether you’re teaching someone” and “Give it all you’ve got. Otherwise, it’s not worth bothering with.”

Mr Tinniswood is Survived by daughter Susan, grandchildren Annouchka, Marisa, Toby and Rupert, and great-grandchildren Tabitha, Callum and Nieve.

“John had many fine qualities. He was intelligent, decisive, brave, calm in any crisis, talented at maths and a great conversationalist,” Mr Tinniswood’s family said in a statement.

According to GWR, the oldest person ever recorded is Jeanne Louise Calment, born on February 21, 1875, and lived for 122 years and 164 days.
