Police arrest bus conductor for beating up motorcyclist
A conductor, Salisu Mohammed, 26, who allegedly beat up a motorcyclist on Thursday, was dragged before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant, a resident of the Tudun Wada area in Kaduna, is facing a one-count charge of assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence on November 22 in the Kawo area of Kaduna.
Mr Leo said that the complainant, Hamisu Garba, had a misunderstanding with a bus driver, but instead of mediating and settling the dispute, the defendant beat him up.
The prosecutor said that the bus driver parked on the road to pick up a passenger, and Garba nearly hit the bus with his motorcycle, which led to an altercation.
Mr Leo said a police patrol team in the area arrested the defendant, who, instead of settling the dispute between the motorcyclist and driver, allegedly pummelled the complainant to a pulp.
The prosecutor said the alleged offence contravened Section 244 of the Penal of Kaduna State, 2017. Section 244 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm for any convicted offender.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties, among other conditions, must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Mr Emmanuel adjourned the case until December 19 for a hearing.
