Human Rights Day: NHRC urges Abia residents to report violations

The National Human Rights Commission has urged Abia residents to report all cases of human rights violations to it for necessary action.
Uche Nwokocha, the Abia coordinator of NHRC, made the call at an awareness campaign that was organised to mark International Human Rights Day on Tuesday.
The commission, which visited parks and markets, was joined in the awareness campaign by its partners, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, civil society organisations, and others.
Ms Nwokocha said that the day, being celebrated with a road walk and rally in Umuahia, marked the end of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which started on November 25.
The coordinator observed that most people whose rights were being violated were often reluctant to report such violations to the appropriate authorities.
Ms Nwokocha, a lawyer, asked the people to always visit the commission’s office in Umuahia or reach it through its other communication channels to seek justice for any rights violation.
According to her, the state actors actually believe it is their right and duty to violate human rights, which is a serious problem.
