Three arrested over demolition of proscribed youth group’s secretariat

The police command in Akwa Ibom said it arrested three in connection with the demolition of the secretariat complex of a proscribed youth group, the Ibom Youth Council.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement to journalists in Uyo on Thursday.
Ms John said that the Ibom Youth Council was proscribed by Governor Umo Eno, following the illegal activities of its members.
She said that a joint security team stormed the group’s secretariat complex at Ikot Isighe in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, following credible intelligence.
The police image maker further said that three persons were arrested while the secretariat complex was demolished in the process.
She said, “Our findings reveal that the group has begun to procure arms, commenced military training, and has started causing security threats. Following the proscription of the group, we have a directive to immediately end the nefarious activities of its members. The plan of the group is to soon commence a full-scale disruption of law and order in the state.’’
Ms John urged property owners in the state not to give their houses out to groups or individuals that engaged in activities that could disrupt public peace.
She also urged residents of the state to be vigilant, and to report suspicious movements within their neighbourhoods.
The police spokesperson said that any property being used to perpetrate crime in the state would be demolished, and the owners treated as accomplices.
She urged residents of the state to go about their lawful duties, saying that the police were committed to effective protection of lives and property.
