Stakeholders have called for sustained investment in teacher training and accessible learning resources to improve mathematics education for learners with visual impairment across the country.

In a statement on Monday in Lagos, the executive director of the Resource Centre for the Blind (RCB), Temitayo Ayinla, said that well-trained teachers remained central to achieving equitable and inclusive education, and urged governments and development partners to strengthen support for specialised mathematics instruction.

Ms Ayinla said the training also covered specialised teaching methods and the use of assistive instructional devices for learners with visual impairment.

Ms Ayinla said many visually impaired learners continued to face barriers to effective Mathematics education due to inadequate specialised teaching materials, limited assistive devices, and insufficient teacher preparation.

She said these challenges negatively affected learners’ academic performance and limited opportunities in science, technology and other Mathematics-related fields. According to her, improving access to quality Mathematics education requires sustained investment in teachers, who remain the foundation of inclusive education.

She called for stronger collaboration among government, development partners, educational institutions and civil society organisations to promote accessible teaching resources and continuous professional development.

According to her, ensuring equal access to quality Mathematics education for learners with visual impairment is essential for educational inclusion, human capital development and national growth.

The general manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to inclusive education through policies and programmes that support persons with disabilities.

Ms Oyetunde-Lawal said that strengthening teachers’ capacity would enable learners with visual impairments to acquire analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills through quality Mathematics education.

She said LASODA had secured additional examination time for candidates with disabilities during JAMB examinations and continued supporting inclusive schools with educational materials.
