U.S. proposes four-point plan at UN Security Council to halt Sudan war
The U.S. government has proposed four key resolutions to end the war in Sudan and temper raging tensions between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which have killed thousands of civilians.
In a statement on Monday, U.S. senior adviser for Africa, Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs Massad Boulos asked the UN Security Council to extend the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan and expand it to include unmanned aerial vehicles, popularly called drones, and other related technologies.
According to the U.S., drones accounted for the deaths of over 1100 Sudanese citizens in the first half of 2026. A drone embargo is projected to protect civilians.
Washington’s third recommendation was for UN secretary-general António Guterres to increase the number of experts on the 1591 panel, which monitors sanctions and violations in Sudan.
The last proposed resolution was for the UN to direct “the 1591 panel of experts to collaborate with other panels covering the region to better inform the Council of violations of the assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo”.
The U.S. again condemned the RSF and SAF over their ambition to rule, saying it has cost the Sudanese access to quality lives as the majority of the citizens were “living a nightmare”.
“The brutality of the war waged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has discredited their claims to be legitimate governors of the Sudanese people,” said Mr Boulos.
