No less than 10 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the northern West Bank, Palestinian authorities said on Wednesday.

The Israeli military said it targeted a group of armed men with an aircraft in the West Bank town of Tamun but did not provide further details.

According to Palestinian reports, an Israeli drone fired three missiles at a house.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah reported 10 deaths, while the Red Crescent said several others were injured, some critical.

The strike came just over a week after the Israeli army launched a large-scale military operation in Jenin, which is also in the north of the West Bank.

The Israeli military will remain in Jenin after the operation ends.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli military will keep a presence in Jenin following the current military operation in the northern West Bank city, considered a stronghold of Palestinian militants.

“The refugee camp in Jenin will not be the same again,’’ Mr Katz said during a troop visit to the city.

After the end of the current operation, the military would “remain in the city to ensure that terror does not return,’’ he was quoted as saying by his office.

The Israeli military launched a major operation dubbed Iron Wall in Jenin on January 21.

No fewer than 16 people have been killed in the wider Jenin area as a result, including bystanders, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

The aim of the Iron Wall was to smash “terrorist infrastructure built in Palestinian camps with Iranian funding and equipment,’’ Mr Katz claimed.

Mr Katz also announced that the operation would be expanded.

Mr Katz also accused the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the occupied West Bank, of financing terror and murder against Jews.

However, before the start of the Israeli operation, PA security forces had been deployed for several weeks in Jenin against militant forces, with deaths on both sides.

Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem, among other territories, during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Today, around 700,000 Israeli settlers live there among three million Palestinians.
