The Plateau government says the proposed Jos Master Plan will address the state’s housing deficit, particularly for low-income earners.

Ubandoma Laven, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, disclosed this in an interview on Monday in Jos.

The commissioner, who decried the spike in house rent, particularly within Jos and its environs, said the plan would enable the government to provide affordable housing for low-income earners.

Mr Laven also explained that the state would leverage grants from its development partners to fund the implementation of the master plan. He added that housing for the poor was part of the conditions for accessing the available grants.

“Apart from the fact that the new Jos Master Plan will beautify and reorganise our major cities, the governor is also worried about the rising cost of house rent in the state.

“This is why we intend to construct houses for low-income earners as part of the new master plan. We shall access funding from development partners like the World Bank and the United States, among others, to achieve this dream.

“Our vision is to make our cities beautiful, attractive, homely, and ensure that people who are earning little still have affordable homes,” he said.

Mr Laven explained that his ministry had recently organised a seminar to sensitise critical stakeholders towards the actualisation of the new Jos Master Plan.
