The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, condemned the alleged derogatory remarks against the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.

The said comments were made by Dr Doyin Odebowale, a former Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy to the late Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

The lawmakers decried the comments reportedly made during a recent broadcast on Lagelu FM, Ibadan, Oyo State, describing them as factually incorrect, disrespectful, and inciting.

The matter was brought up via a motion sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South-PDP).

The motion received unanimous support from the legislators, who emphasised the importance of protecting the integrity of traditional rulers in Oyo State.

They reaffirmed the vital role of traditional institutions in preserving the culture, heritage, and unity of communities in Oyo State.

The assembly pointed out that Mr Odebowale’s comments violated the Nigeria Broadcasting Code of Ethics and the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap N11, LFN 2004.

They, therefore, urged the state executive arm of government to take decisive actions to safeguard traditional institutions from unwarranted attacks.

Similarly, the lawmakers called on the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to seek legal redress against Mr Odebowale.

Lagelu FM and its presenter, Temitayo Oyeladun, popularly known as ‘Aboo Oro,’ were also criticised for failing to uphold professional broadcasting ethics during the contentious programme.

The house, therefore, urged the ministry of information and orientation to liaise with the NBC to impose disciplinary measures against the station.

As part of the recommended corrective actions, the lawmakers demanded a public apology from Lagelu FM in addition to a broadcast to retract the alleged misleading and offensive comments.

The assembly reiterated its commitment to upholding respect for the custodians of culture while ensuring that media outfits operate within ethical and legal boundaries.
