Africa’s first TV presenter Anike Agbaje-Williams dies at 88
Anike Agbaje-Williams, Africa’s first TV presenter, passed away on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo state, at age 88.
Ms Agbaje-Williams’ demise was announced in a statement on Thursday by Banji Sokoya, a relative.
Ms Agbaje-Williams passed away in Ibadan.
Ms Agbaje-Williams was born on October 23, 1937.
On October 31, 1959, Ms Agbaje-Williams etched her name in history by being the first face to appear on the first TV station in Africa, the Western Nigerian Television station (WNTV) in Ibadan, now known as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) during its test transmission and the official opening night.
Ms Agbaje-Williams was the first voice heard on Western Nigerian Broadcasting Service (WNBS), Africa’s first commercial radio station.
As the first voice and first face in Africa’s first radio and TV stations, the remarkable achievement earned her the ‘Double-First’ moniker.
She retired in July 1986 as a producer and director of programmes.
“Her death is a moment of great sadness for the entire family, and her loss would be greatly felt by all those who knew her,” said the family statement. “The family profoundly mourns the passing of a great icon and a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.”
It added, “The family understands that her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country and also abroad by many people. They would be comforted and reassured by the knowledge that she lived a glorious, remarkable and impactful life.
“She inspired lots of fans and mentees through the years, and the family appreciates your thoughts and prayers. She will remain in our hearts forever.”
