Two Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Rafah in the Gaza Strip on Monday, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The Israeli army said two suspects approached Israeli troops in the south of the Gaza Strip and posed an immediate threat, prompting the soldiers to fire at them.

The fatal incident took place in the centre of the city in the south of the coastal area, WAFA reported.

Over the weekend, the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist Hamas came to an end.

So far, the two sides have been unable to agree on an extension.
