The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s North-East region, particularly in Borno, which has been severely affected by insurgency.

The British deputy high commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the Borno Government House in Maiduguri.

She said, “At the British government, we recognise the efforts of His Excellency, the governor, in tackling insurgency and supporting the people of Borno state, particularly in securing a prosperous future for those displaced by conflict.”

She reiterated the UK’s dedication to regional stabilisation efforts, particularly through its support for the Regional Stabilisation Facility, which focuses on rebuilding communities and fostering economic recovery in conflict-affected areas.

Receiving the envoy on behalf of Governor Babagana Zulum, the secretary to the state government, Bukar Tijjani, expressed appreciation for the UK government’s continued partnership and assistance.

“With the UK government, we have built strong partnerships across multiple sectors. His Excellency appreciates this collaboration and has specifically instructed me to convey a special message of appreciation,” Mr Tijjani stated.

He said the UK remains a key development partner, supporting humanitarian and stabilisation initiatives to help communities recover from the decade-long insurgency.

According to him, the state government has been implementing policies aimed at resettling displaced communities, reviving agriculture, and rebuilding critical infrastructure to ensure long-term stability.
