Governors from southern states of Nigeria have resolved that arrests in any part of the region must be done with the knowledge of governors and in accordance to the law and human rights of the citizens.

The governors who converged at Ikeja, the capital of Lagos state on Monday, asked the federal government to inform state governments or the Chief Security Officer in the state of any security operation.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the governors of the south emphasised on the need for state policing, while they demanded that funds received from the Nigeria Police Trust Fund “should be distributed among the states and federal governments to combat security challenges.” 

Their communiqué reads further: “Resolved that if for any reason security institutions need to undertake an operation in any State, the Chief Security Officer of the State must be duly informed.

“The forum frowns at selective criminal administration of justice and resolved that arrests should be made within the ambit of the law and fundamental human rights
“Resolved that Funds deducted from the Federation Account for the Nigeria Police Security Trust Fund should be distributed among the States and Federal Government to combat security challenges.”

On Thursday, the State Security Service invaded and ransacked the residence of Sunday Igboho, Yoruba nation agitator without the knowledge of local authorities and security operatives.

However, the SSS confirmed that they were present at the Ibadan residence of Mr Igboho, and killed two people at the location. Mr Igboho was also declared wanted by the SSS for planning an attack against the country. 

Similarly, the federal security forces have been hacking down top commanders of the outlawed Independent People of Biafra.

The group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who eloped from Nigeria while undergoing prosecution, was last week repatriated under mysterious conditions.
