Togolese bags two-month jail term for stealing farm produce

An Ona-Ara Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old Togolese, Sunday Abalo, to two months imprisonment for stealing farm produce and other items worth N538,000.
Abalo, a farm labourer, pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of stealing.
The Magistrate, A.M. Ayo-Alagbe, therefore convicted Abalo and sentenced him to two months imprisonment on each of the counts.
He ordered that the sentence should run concurrently.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Salewa Hammed, told the court that the convict committed the offence sometime in January, at Oju-Ile Village, Olunde Akanran in Ibadan.
He stated that the convict stole tubers of yam and bananas worth N480,000 from a farm owned by Segun Oladele, who hired Abalo as a labourer.
He said the convict also entered Oladele’s house and stole cooking pots valued at N25,000 and a water container valued at N33,000, belonging to one Dasola Azeez.
The total sum of the items stolen, according to him, was N538,000.
Hammed said the offence contravened Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
