South-West governors have formed a constitution amendment committee following a meeting with federal lawmakers from the region.

Also in the meeting were state legislators from the South-West.

The meeting was held after the southern governors’ meeting on Monday to discuss issues of national interest, particularly to present a common position regarding the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, stated, “The meeting, which had Governors, distinguished senators and members of the House of Representatives, discussed so many areas of interest.

“But most importantly, the meeting today (Tuesday) deliberated on constitutional amendments. And we have resolved that we would present a common position as regards amendments to the constitution.”

He added, “The committee is to harmonise our position so that we can present it when necessary before the two Houses and at the end of the day have a constitutional amendment that has our serious input.”

Peoples Gazette reported that the southern governors met on Monday and demanded that the next president of Nigeria should emerge from the South as the country gears up for the 2023 presidential election.

They also rejected the removal of electronic transmission of election results from the Electoral Act.
