Vietnam issues directive on candidate selection for national election

Individuals who head agencies where corruption or wastefulness has occurred will not be nominated as candidates for the national assembly and all levels of People’s Councils.
The Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam announced this in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement was part of a newly issued Politburo directive guiding the preparation and leadership of the upcoming election for the 2026-2031 term of the national assembly and People’s Councils at all levels.
According to the directive, individuals currently under inspection or investigation for signs of violations would also be excluded from the list of candidates.
Vietnam’s national election, scheduled for March 15, 2026, would elect deputies to the 16th assembly and members of People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term.
