Former Ajax forward, Quincy Promes, has been extradited from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Netherlands to begin serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and aggravated assault offences.

Promes was arrested by Emirati authorities in Dubai last week following a request by the Dutch police, who had been trying for the past one year to arrest the ex-Netherlands international following his criminal convictions last year.

A Dutch court had in February 2024 convicted the 33-year-old for his role in smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands from Belgium in 2020.

This followed a previous conviction for stabbing his cousin in the knee during a family gathering in the same year.

Promes, who was tried in absentia in the two cases as he was playing in Russia at the time, was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in jail for the stabbing incident and six years imprisonment for the drug trafficking offence.

However, instead of returning to the Netherlands to begin his sentence, Promes fled to the UAE, where he was arrested in 2024 before being released under the condition of temporarily remaining in the country.

Following his release, Promes signed for Emirati top-flight side Dubai United, where he had been playing until his arrest last week and subsequent extradition to his home country.

Meanwhile, Promes denied the charges and has filed appeals in both cases.
