Ebonyi SEMA plans quick tour of flood-ravaged Afikpo LG

The Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency said it will quickly undertake an on-the-spot assessment of the recent flooding in Enohia Itim, Afikpo Local Government Area.
The Executive Secretary, Clement Ovuoba, stated during an interview on Monday in Abakaliki.
It was gathered that severe flooding which occurred in Enohia Itim, Afikpo on August 1, destroyed lives and farmlands.
Mr Ovuoba stated that the agency only got the information about the incident on Sunday, saying, “we are gearing for an on-the-spot assessment.”
The SEMA official said that an official report would be sent to the National Emergency Management Agency after the assessment.
Also speaking, the councillor, representing Itim, at the Afikpo Legislative Council, Francis Abani-Okpani said that the community became flooded due to severe rainfall.
He said, “The incident occurred on August 1, farmlands have been destroyed, lives have been lost too.’’
The Chairman, Afikpo Local Government Council, Timothy Nwachi, described the incident as ‘tragic,’ assuring of the council’s commitment to supporting the affected families.
He said, “As a council, we shall collaborate with the federal and state governments to provide assistance and relief to the community. We urge our people that dwell in flood-prone areas to apply climate change precautionary measures in their daily activities. Avoid improper refuse disposal practices, do not block the drains, keep the environment safe.’’
