Police arraign man, 45, over alleged N1. 7 million fraud

The magistrate adjourned the case until September 4 for mention.

The police in Lagos on Wednesday, arraigned a 45-year-old man, Adekunle Asulewon, in Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraud and breach of peace.

The defendant, whose address is unknown, is being charged with fraud and breach of peace, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offences July 24 at Pako, Oko-Afo, Badagry, Lagos.

Mr Ekpo alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by causing pandemonium.

He said, “The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N1,700,000 from one Mulikat Kasim, the complainant, under the pretence of boosting her business which he didn’t do. He was arrested and handed over to police for prosecution. The offence contravenes Sections 168 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.’’

The Chief Magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum, one of which must be self-employed.

Mr Layeni adjourned the case until September 4 for mention.
