Labourer arraigned for stealing electronics

A 25-year-old labourer, Mohammed Haruna, was on Thursday arraigned in a Kaduna magistrates’ court, charged with stealing electronic appliances worth N1.1 million.
Mr Haruna, a resident of Kinkinau, Kaduna, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 6, at Rigasa, Kaduna.
According to Mr Leo, the defendant and two others at large entered the complainant, Garba Abubakar’s shop through the ceiling and stole electronic appliances worth N1.1 million.
“The defendant was sighted by a security guard in the process of stealing the appliances, which led to his arrest while the others escaped,” the prosecutor said.
Mr Leo said that the offence contravened Sections 58 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
Section 217 stipulates seven years’ imprisonment for stealing if found guilty.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties who are responsible.
He said that one of the sureties must be a community leader, and he adjourned the case until September 4 for a hearing.
