Bloody Week: Tinubu emboldening bandits by his ‘stunning failure,’ says Amnesty International

Amnesty International on Friday said the “stunning failure” of President Bola Tinubu’s government emboldens bandits’ reckless killings, describing the week as a “bloody” one.
“The end of yet another bloody week,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “Incessant killings and the stunning failure of the authorities to end them and bring suspected perpetrators to justice have been and continue to be a threat to the right to life in Nigeria.”
Highlighting the killings during the week, the human rights organisation added, “This week alone, at least 65 people have been killed in horrific attacks.”
“In Katsina state, in an attack on worshippers in a mosque, gunmen killed over 50 people and abducted over 60 people. In Plateau State, over 15 farmers were slaughtered by gunmen in Mangu LGA. As a result, over 200 people were displaced,” Amnesty International said.
The group further stated that the alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom, and frequent killings across Nigeria have left people feeling increasingly unsafe, highlighting the failure of Nigerian authorities to protect lives and property.
“The Nigerian authorities must do more to address the horrifying and increasing threat to the right to life in some parts of the country,” it added.
The same week labelled “bloody” by Amnesty International coincided with President Tinubu’s travel abroad.
He left Nigeria on Tuesday for Tokyo, Japan, to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). He departed Japan on Friday for Brazil, stopping over in Los Angeles, according to his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
