Political leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s North-Central have launched a grassroots mobilisation movement to support President Bola Tinubu-led administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The North-Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 was launched at an inaugural meeting held at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja on Friday.

Mr Akume said the North-Central had the overriding objective of delivering the highest regional vote total for Mr Tinubu.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule commended the initiative as timely and said the challenges ahead of the 2027 election were gradually receding.

He added that the latest voter register, according to him, indicated strong support for the APC in the North-Central region.

Mr Sule expressed confidence that the region would deliver the highest number of votes for Mr Tinubu and other candidates contesting under the APC platform.

He noted that the political strength of the North-Central, which currently has the SGF, the APC national chairman and several key political appointees, was significantly stronger than it was ahead of the 2023 election.

He said the region would leverage the movement to take the party’s message to the grassroots and mobilise support across the region.

Sonny Echono, the movement’s national coordinator, said the conversation was no longer simply about whether Mr Tinubu would win the North-Central, but about positioning the region to deliver the highest number of votes to him in the 2027 election.

Mr Echono commended Mr Akume, the North Central Governors’ Forum and other stakeholders across the region for their commitment and support for the Tinubu administration.

He said the movement would serve as a platform for bringing together political leaders, grassroots actors and other stakeholders to coordinate mobilisation across the region ahead of the election.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the movement as the first of its kind and commended Mr Echono for the initiative.

At the end of the meeting, the stakeholders resolved to intensify grassroots mobilisation for Mr Tinubu and other APC candidates in the 2027 elections.

They also approved a grand rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State, alongside a medical outreach programme, grassroots advocacy tours and town hall meetings across the region.

The stakeholders further resolved to establish a reconciliation committee to address grievances among APC members and strengthen coordination within the party across the North Central.

The North-Central comprises Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
