13 inmates apply for parole as Edo board ends review hearing

The Edo State Parole Board has reviewed 13 applications for parole from inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Benin.
Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Aminu Suleman, disclosed this in a statement in Benin City on Wednesday.
Mr Suleman also said that five shortlisted inmates out of the 13 were already undergoing direct interviews to assess their eligibility for early release.
According to him, the hearing, chaired by Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga (retd), concluded after an initial session held the previous week.
He said the review process focused on inmates’ good behaviour, productivity while in custody, evidence of reformation and rehabilitation, as well as their concrete plans for reintegration into society.
“This process is about giving a second chance while ensuring public safety. Our responsibility is to balance justice with rehabilitation in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019,” he quoted Eruaga as saying.
He added that the board would forward its final recommendations to the Commander General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, for the next phase of approval.
The Edo State NCoS spokesperson noted that parole went beyond the inmates themselves, as it benefits not only those seeking a second chance but also contributes to safer communities and a stronger nation.
He disclosed that other members of the board include representatives from the correctional service, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and professionals from PRAWA.
Mr Suleman stated, “There were also representatives from the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association, the Association of Medical Social Workers, and “the Edo State Civil Society Organisation.’’
