Egypt to consider pardon for jailed prominent activist
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi has directed authorities to consider a presidential pardon for prominent Egyptian-British activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah, a key figure in the 2011 uprising.
The move follows a petition by the National Council for Human Rights, which listed Mr Abdel-Fattah among seven prisoners recommended for release.
Although Mr Abdel-Fattah completed his latest sentence in September 2024, he remains in custody. He resumed a hunger strike on September 1 to protest his continued detention, according to his mother, Laila Soueif.
Mr Abdel-Fattah was first jailed in 2013 and later re-arrested on charges of spreading false news—charges his family says are politically motivated.
Amnesty International expressed concern over his deteriorating condition, calling his situation “desperate”.
The group urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow through on his promise to secure Mr Abdel-Fattah’s release.
