The Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN) has called on the federal government to intensify diplomatic efforts to protect Nigerian citizens in South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks.

The forum made the call in a statement on Tuesday after visiting the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations at the National Assembly, Abuja.

The visit followed a formal letter submitted by the forum to the committee on concerns over attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, as well as the destruction of livelihoods and businesses.

The forum, led by its chairman, Eze Onyebuchi, said it appreciated the invitation by the committee and the Senate’s attention to the plight of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

It, however, expressed concern over continued attacks on Nigerians and the need for urgent measures to guarantee their safety.

“Appreciation must translate to action. On behalf of Nigerian youths across all political parties, the forum’s position stands, and the July 31 deadline remains,” Mr Onyebuchi said.

The forum said it expected concrete diplomatic, legal and protective measures for Nigerians in South Africa before the expiration of the deadline.

It called for immediate and firm diplomatic action by the federal government against the South African authorities, as well as compensation and restitution for affected Nigerians.

The forum also demanded enhanced consular protection through Nigeria’s mission in Pretoria and intervention by the African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address Afrophobia.

According to the statement, the chairman of the Senate Committee, Aniekan Bassey, commended the forum for channelling its concerns through democratic means.

The forum said the senator acknowledged government efforts, including evacuation, medical and financial support for affected Nigerians, as well as ongoing steps towards compensation and repatriation.

It added that the committee assured the delegation of continued efforts to address the concerns raised and prioritise the welfare of Nigerians abroad.
