Trump to impose 100 % tariff on movies made outside U.S.
President Donald Trump on Monday said he will impose a 100 per cent tariff on movies made outside the U.S. to support and promote American films.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said the business in the American movie industry had been “stolen” by foreign movie industries.
“Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,'” Mr Trump said.
The American president further said, “California, with its weak and incompetent governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long-time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100 per cent tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”
Mr Trump first made this threat to impose tariffs on foreign movie industries in the American market in May.
A 100 per cent tariff on foreign movie industries could also affect Nigerian movies and music videos entering the American market through streaming platforms, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other music streaming platforms.
In recent years, Nigerian showbiz, Nollywood, and Afrobeat music have formed a major export.
Mr Trump’s threat comes amid several tariffs his government has targeted against countries since his second return to the White House in January.
