Inspector general of police Kayode Egbetokun has charged officers recently called to the Bar to use their legal expertise in defending and strengthening the force.

Mr Egbetokun gave the charge at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, after receiving the officers, according to a statement on Tuesday by police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin.

He described their call to the Bar as a valuable addition to the police, noting that their knowledge must be used to strengthen the police.

“You are not just returning as police officers, but as legal professionals. Your knowledge must be used to strengthen the Force and to better serve Nigerians,” Mr Egbetokun said.

The statement noted that the development comes as the police recently upgraded its legal section to a full directorate.

It added that the directorate is now being led by an assistant IGP, a move seen as part of ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing legal oversight and capacity within the institution.

The statement further revealed that among the newly qualified lawyers was deputy superintendent of police Idachaba Laraba, specially recognised by Mr Egbetokun for graduating with first class honours from the Nigerian Law School.
