Court jails 10 for illegal petroleum dealing in Delta

Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa of the Delta State Division of the Federal High Court has convicted 10 individuals of illegal petroleum dealing.
In a statement on Friday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the convicts were sentenced after pleading guilty.
The convicts are James Terry, Gift Ezewu Godfrey, Obidi Peter Obi, Anthony Onyebuchi Edekobi, Victor Ataria Sule, Jubril Abubakar, Auwal Aliyu, Nnemeja Nwobod, Victor Eden and Sunday Ndem Eyere.
The defendants were found to have dealt in petroleum products, specifically automotive gas oil (AGO), which did not meet the expected quality standards.
According to the EFCC, they were arraigned on a one-count charge of criminal conspiracy and illegal dealing in petroleum products.
It cited Section 1(18)(a)(ii) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
The commission said all the defendants pleaded guilty to the charge upon arraignment, prompting the prosecution counsel, Francis Jirbo, to ask the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.
The judge sentenced Mr Terry and Ms Godfrey to two years’ imprisonment each, with an option of a N300,000 fine.
Messrs Obi, Sule, Abubakar, Aliyu, Nwobod and Eden were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment each, with an option of a N300,000 fine.
