LASCOPA recovers N530 million for consumers across sectors

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) said it facilitated the recovery of N530 million and $14,901 on behalf of consumers across diverse sectors.

The agency’s general manager, Afolabi Solebo, made this known at the maiden edition of the Consumer Appreciation and Awards event for stakeholders, held at Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

Mr Solebo also said that as part of consumer complaints and redress, since the agency’s inception in March 2018, it received 11,101 consumer complaints, of which 10,474 were successfully resolved.

He noted that 437 complaints were currently being processed and 197 referred to relevant agencies for further action.

The general manager also disclosed that LASCOPA carried out over five enforcement operations to rid the markets of expired and hazardous products.

Mr Solebo emphasised the agency’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and promoting fair trade practices.

He stated that the agency intensified consumer education through major campaigns and partnerships with the National Youth Service Corps, schools, trade associations, market leaders, and community groups.

He said, “We are dedicated to building a Lagos where every consumer can buy, trade, and consume with confidence. Together, let us continue to build a Lagos where consumer rights are respected, businesses thrive on integrity, and every resident enjoys the assurance of safety, fairness, and value.”

Mr Solebo stated that the event was an opportunity for LASCOPA to celebrate the invaluable role of stakeholders in promoting fair trade, protecting consumer rights, and strengthening public trust in Lagos markets

According to him, the event spotlights individuals and organisations that distinguished themselves in safeguarding consumer rights and promoting consumer-friendly practices.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to some corporate organisations in recognition of their outstanding commitment to consumer protection and service excellence.

The awardees are Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, British Airways, Friesland Campina Wamco Nig. Plc, Jumia, Spar Market, Guaranty Trust Bank, Palmpay Ltd, among others.

The Chief Operating Officer of Jumia, Marilin Oruwari, thanked LASCOPA for the recognition, assuring of its continued support and protection of the interests of customers across the country.

Similarly, Yomi Eleyowo, a representative of Friesland Campina Wamco Nig. Plc., applauded LASCOPA for the recognition awards.

He said, “We will continue to collaborate with the agency and make sure that consumers get value for their money and that they’re well protected.”
