Lagos records death of fifth female council official in two months
Lagos State has been plunged into yet another mourning following the death of Council Manager of Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Adebimpe Akinola, making her the fifth female local government official to die in the state within a span of two months.
Mrs. Akinola, who until her demise on Monday, September 29, 2025, served as the Chairman of the Forum of Council Managers in Lagos State, reportedly died after a brief illness. She was remembered by colleagues as a steadfast administrator and the Head of Administration at Coker/Aguda LCDA.
In a statement announcing her death, the Forum of Council Managers said, “With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing away of our dear Chairman, Mrs. Adebimpe Akinola, this afternoon, Monday, 29th September, 2025. She was the Council Manager of Coker/Aguda LCDA until her death.”
She was buried according to Islamic rites on Tuesday, September 30.
Mrs. Akinola’s death is the latest in shocking deaths of female council officials in Lagos State since the inauguration of the present council administration on July 27, 2025.
On August 13, Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai of Ward C in Ibeju Lekki Local Government died weeks after her inauguration. Barely five days later, on August 18, Councillor Zainab Shotayo of Ward C in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA also passed away.
The tragedies deepened in September: on September 20, Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, died, followed the next day by Councillor Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan of Ward F in Somolu Local Government on September 21.
With Mrs. Akinola’s passing, Lagos has lost five female council officials in less than seven weeks—an unprecedented string of deaths that has triggered concerns across the state’s local government system.
The tragedies have cast a pall over the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, where many are struggling to comprehend the sudden succession of deaths within their ranks.
While no official connection was established among the deaths—all attributed to illness—many residents describe the pattern as disturbing, especially given the short time frame and the fact that all the deceased were women serving at the local government level.
