A bill to establish the Benue Education Quality Assurance Examination Board has passed second reading at the State House Assembly.

The majority leader, Thomas Dugeri, who led the debate on Tuesday, said the primary objective of the bill was to merge the Bureau of Education Quality Assurance with the Benue State Examinations Board.

Mr Dugeri stated that the bill also sought to reactivate the supervisory and monitoring activities in the educational sector.

“The proposed legislation envisages enhanced standards and quality of education in basic and post-basic educational institutions across Benue.

“The foundation of any human enterprise is cardinal to its success and sustainability.

“Basic and post-basic education form the foundation of education, and standards at that level must not be compromised,” Mr Dugeri said.

The majority leader said the passage of the bill would create an institutional framework for effective supervision, monitoring, and enforcement of high standards in education.

He, therefore, moved that the bill be read for the second time and committed to the relevant committee for further legislative processing.

The minority leader, Abu Umoru, who seconded the motion, stated that the passage of the bill would strengthen both the primary and post-primary education in the state.

After the second reading was completed by the clerk, Bem Mela, Speaker Alfred Emberga referred the bill to the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business to be slated for third reading on Wednesday.
