Renowned activist Abiodun Aremu killed by hit-and-run driver

Abiodun Aremu, activist and secretary of the Joint Action Front, a coalition of Nigerian pro-labour civil society organisations, is dead.
Mr Aremu was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver at Ota, Ogun, on Sunday evening. The activist died in a hospital shortly after.
The popular activist was said to have been knocked down around 6:00 p.m., when he was crossing the road by a hit-and-run driver who immediately fled the scene.
The 65-year-old pro-labour campaigner was, however, confirmed dead at a nearby hospital, despite efforts by doctors to resuscitate him with oxygen.
Confirming his demise, Owei Lakemfa, former secretary-general of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity and ex-acting general secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, stated on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Movement that the veteran activist will be buried on October 23.
Mr Lakemfa said that Mr Aremu, whom he described as one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time, has “joined the pantheon of revolutionaries on Sunday, October 12, 2025”.
Although his burial was initially fixed for October 13, Mr Lakemfa disclosed that the Aremu family “has agreed with the labour movement that the interment of our leader, Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu, be moved by about two weeks”.
Mr Lakemfa added, “This is to allow for proper mobilisation and attendance. Consequently, Comrade Aremu will now be interred on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
“The greatest honour we can give our fearless teacher and leader is to continue in his footsteps and build a world founded on social justice.”
