Two suspects have been arrested a week after thieves raided and looted some historic jewels at the world’s most-visited museum, the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

After a week of investigations, French local media, BFMTV, on Sunday reported that “Two suspects in their thirties were arrested and taken into custody.”

According to the report, one of them was arrested last night at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Algeria.

Forensic investigations of some objects found at the burglary scene, including a yellow vest, a helmet, and a blowtorch, revealed “determining DNA” that matches that of one of the suspects.

France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez applauded the investigators over the arrest, saying they “have worked tirelessly” since the heist.

Last Sunday, the thieves raided the Galerie d’Apollon building of the Louvre Museum, looting eight of France’s crown jewels, worth an estimated €88 million.

The heist was another incident recorded at the Louvre. In 1911, Mona Lisa, the world’s most famous painting, was stolen from the museum by a former employee. But it was found after two years in Florence, Italy.

Similarly, two Renaissance-era pieces of armour were stolen from the museum in 1983. They were recovered some decades later.

Other French museums have suffered thefts of artefacts and other valuable items in recent times. Just last month, thieves raided Paris’s Natural History Museum, looting gold samples worth 600,000 euros ($700,000).
