Adebowale Lawal, police commissioner in Ondo, on Wednesday urged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers to maintain law and order during the yuletide season across the state.

Mr Lawal gave the charge during a stakeholders meeting with the executive members of the union on Wednesday in Akure.

Mr Lawal said the engagement was part of the inspector general of police’s directive. He urged union members to remain law-abiding and to strictly refrain from the use of alcohol or any intoxicating substances while driving.

The police chief explained that the conduct was critical to ensuring the safety of commuters and other road users, especially during the festive period.

Mr Lawal further assured the union that the command had put in place comprehensive security measures to safeguard commuters and their property throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to him, additional personnel have been deployed for both overt and covert operations across motor parks, highways, and strategic locations within the state to prevent crime and ensure a peaceful festive season.

He commended the robust inter-agency collaboration between the police and Federal Road Safety Corps, noting that their strategic roles have significantly improved traffic management and crime control across the state.

According to him, the IGP’s reforms have continued to strengthen intelligence-sharing, enhance operational coordination, and improve efficiency across police formations nationwide.

The CP also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his unwavering support to the command, particularly in sustaining peace, security, and public safety across the state.

He further reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property during and after the festive period.

“All necessary security measures have been reinforced to sustain peace across the state. Consequently, all area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical team commanders are to remain vigilant and ensure robust security coverage across all areas throughout this period and beyond,” Mr Lawal said.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for the NURTW leadership to reaffirm their commitment to cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order.
