Ndidi vows to pay Super Eagles’ AFCON bonuses if payment delay persists
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has promised to pay the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations match bonuses owed to the team’s players and officials if payment is not received by Saturday.
He added that he had been imploring the team to train and play since the second game of the tournament against Tunisia.
This was disclosed in an X post by BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji on Thursday, amid confirmation by Deputy Finance Minister Doris Uzoka-Anite that the federal government had streamlined the processing of outstanding payments to allow the team to start receiving their bonuses either immediately or on Friday.
“I’ve been pushing the team to train and play the game vs Algeria,” Ndidi told Okeleji. “I’ve been doing this since the second game. I’ve now made a commitment to the staff and players that I’ll personally pay the bonuses if the authority fails to before Saturday.”
He added, “I don’t want these unpaid bonuses to affect our preparations. I told players and coaching staff that I’d personally make the payments if they don’t get it.”
Meanwhile, the team arrived in Marrakech on Thursday evening and is set to train later in the day as they await the outstanding bonuses ahead of the quarterfinal match against Algeria on Saturday.
