The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to curb road accidents and reduce fleet losses with the commencement of the Fourth Edition of the Defensive Driving and Drivers’ Etiquette Workshop for its drivers in Abuja.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop on Saturday, the Chief of Logistics (Army), Maj.-Gen. Adekunle Adeyinka, said the initiative was aimed at addressing recurring safety challenges, rising vehicle maintenance costs and the need for improved professionalism among Nigerian Army drivers.

Mr Adeyinka was represented by the Deputy Chief of Logistics (Engineering Services), Maj.-Gen. A.G. Audu.

He noted that driving within the Nigerian army was not merely a support function but a critical operational enabler that had direct implications for mission success, force protection and public confidence.

The logistics chief said drivers were frontline representatives of the Nigerian army, whose conduct on the road must reflect the discipline, values and standards of the service.

According to him, defensive driving goes beyond technical competence, requiring sound judgement, anticipation, patience and restraint, while proper driving etiquette promotes respect for traffic regulations and other road users.

Mr Adeyinka said the consistent workshops underscored the army’s commitment to continuous training and institutional improvement.

He added that the comprehensive programme combined classroom instruction, practical demonstrations, interactive sessions, modern vehicle familiarisation, health and safety awareness, and driving simulation exercises.

Earlier, the Corps Commander, Supply and Transport (Army), Maj.-Gen. Nansak Shagaya, said the workshop aligned with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy of transforming the army into a more professional, adaptable and combat-ready force.

Mr Shagaya said the army introduced new variants of vehicles into its fleet over the years to meet expanding administrative and operational demands, noting that the high cost of acquiring and maintaining the assets made accident prevention and responsible driving imperative.

He expressed optimism that the training would reduce avoidable accidents, protect lives and equipment, lower fuel consumption and extend vehicle lifespan.

The workshop, organised by the Headquarters Supply and Transport, is part of the Nigerian army’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety consciousness, professionalism and efficiency across its formations. (NAN)
