The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yobe command, says road traffic crashes declined by 26 per cent in 2025.

The state sector commander, Andrew Longkam, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Damaturu.

“You may recall our earlier address at the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign across the state,” Mr Longkam said.

He said the campaign featured a press conference, motorcade and town hall meetings to promote safer road use.

According to him, crash data for 2025 shows a reduction from 158 cases recorded in 2024 to 117 in 2025. 

He, however, said fatalities increased from 78 in 2024 to 115 in 2025, while injuries rose from 867 to 926.

The sector commander said the number of persons involved in crashes increased from 1,549 in 2024 to 1,664 in 2025.

He added that the number of persons rescued without iinjury rose from 604 in 2024 to 623 in 2025.

Mr Longkam said the increase in fatalities did not reflect poor performance, noting that enforcement and public enlightenment were intensified during the period.

He said a total of 13,538 traffic offenders were arrested and sanctioned in 2025.

The sector commander said speeding was responsible for about 80 per cent of crashes, adding that tyre violations, dangerous driving, overloading and route violations were the major causes of avoidable crashes.

He reaffirmed the command’s readiness to renew strategies in line with the Corps’ Corporate Strategic Goal 2026 of reducing road traffic crashes by 10 per cent nationwide through data-driven interventions.

Mr Longkam said that his command was committed to intensify enforcement, increase public enlightenment and collaboration with emergency services, among other measures.

He urged the stakeholders and the public to obey traffic rules and regulations, saying road safety was a collective responsibility.
