Stakeholders in Bauchi State have validated the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy 2026–2030, a strategic framework designed to tackle water and sanitation challenges in the state.

Samaila Tela, the permanent secretary of the state Ministry of Water Resources, said during the validation workshop on Friday in Bauchi that the policy would ensure sustainable service delivery across the state.

The workshop was organised by the Women Development Association for Self-Sustenance (WODASS), with support from WaterAid Nigeria.

Mr Tela said the aim of the workshop was to enable stakeholders to review and validate the document.

According to him, the policy provides a comprehensive roadmap for improved access to safe, reliable, and inclusive WASH services for all residents.

Mr Tela said the policy also focuses on strengthening institutional capacity, expanding infrastructure, promoting behavioural change, and enhancing climate resilience in the sector.

He added, “Successful implementation of this policy will significantly improve public health outcomes, protect the environment, and create socio-economic opportunities for communities.”

A representative of WaterAid, Mashat Mallo, said, “The policy prioritises expanding access to water supply services in rural communities and small towns through climate-resilient investments.

“The strategy includes rehabilitation of non-functional water systems, expansion of piped networks, adoption of renewable energy technologies such as solar-powered water schemes, and an increase in access to water supply services.

“It also provides for the construction of WASH facilities in schools, healthcare centres and public places, particularly in underserved rural and peri-urban communities.”

Mr Mallo said the policy aligned with Nigeria’s commitment to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
