Peter Jiya, senator representing Niger South senatorial district, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and read during plenary on Wednesday, Jiya cited internal disputes within his former party as the reason for his resignation.

The senator, who won the 2023 election under the PDP, defeating APC’s Senator Muhammad Bima Enagi, stated in the letter that he was resigning with effect from March 10.

“I wish to notify you and the Senate that I have resigned my membership of the People’s Democratic Party effective today. This action is premised on quarrels and irreconcilable divisions within the party,” the letter stated.

Mr Jiya also announced his decision to continue his political career under the APC.

“Kindly take further notice that effective today, I have decided to join and be associated with the All Progressive Congress (APC) to further my political career,” he added.
