Federal, state governments urged to focus on science-driven reforms in healthcare

A non-governmental organisation, Health for All Media Initiative, has urged federal and state governments to take urgent, deliberate steps to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system through science-driven policies and inclusive investments.

Secretary of the organisation, Sola Ojo, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday to commemorate the 2026 World Health Day, highlighting the need for renewed commitment to national health priorities.

The group advised that Nigeria should address inadequate infrastructure, workforce shortages, rising preventable diseases, and weak health communication systems by prioritising science, data, and community-centred healthcare approaches nationwide.

HAMI urged the federal government to increase budgetary allocation and performance in the health sector in line with global benchmarks, strengthen primary healthcare systems, and ensure effective implementation of existing policies.

It also called on state governments to replicate national health frameworks, invest more in rural healthcare delivery, and improve access to essential services for vulnerable and underserved populations across their jurisdictions.

He further emphasised the need to combat misinformation and disinformation while rebuilding public trust through transparent communication and sustained engagement, especially regarding vaccination, maternal health, and ongoing nationwide disease prevention efforts.

“Nigeria cannot achieve universal health coverage without a unified approach that places science, equity, and collaboration at the centre of health governance,” it said.
