Veteran Indian singer Asha Bhosle has lost the battle to organ failure.

She was aged 92.

Her death was confirmed on Sunday by a doctor Pratit Samdani at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where she was admitted.

“She passed away due to multi organ failure,” he said.

On Saturday, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle in a post on X, said the music icon had been hospitalised due to “extreme exhaustion” and a chest infection, expressing hope that she would recover. 

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a tribute to the late singer on X, describing her as “one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known.”

“Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world,” Mr Modi said, adding that her songs would continue to inspire generations. 

Born on September 8, 1933,  Ms Bhosle began singing as a child and had a career that lasted more than eight decades.

She recorded over 11,000 songs in multiple Indian and foreign languages, earning global recognition for her remarkable range and versatility. 

Ms Bhosle won multiple awards which included the National Film Awards and India’s Dadasaheb Phalke Award. 

She was also a two-time Grammy nominee, being the first Indian singer nominated for a Grammy award in 1977 and was recognised by the Guinness World Records  as the most recorded artist in music history in 2011.

Ms Bhosle is survived by her son, Anand Bhosle, and her grandchildren.
