Chelsea sack coach Rosenior, appoint McFarlane as interim manager

Chelsea Football Club have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior following a run of poor form, including five consecutive league defeats without scoring, with Under-21 coach Calum McFarlane appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
Chelsea ended their relationship with Rosenior just four months after his appointment as successor to Enzo Maresca, with the decision confirmed after the Blues’ tough Tuesday outing, which ended in a 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
In a statement, Chelsea said they had “parted company” with Rosenior, thanking him and his staff for their efforts during their time at the club.
The club added, “This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly; however, recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards, with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.”
The Blues’ poor run also included defeats to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Newcastle United, Everton, Manchester City, and Manchester United.
The Blues also confirmed the appointment of the club’s Under 21 manager, Calum McFarlane, as its interim manager, as the coach will be aided by existing back-room staff, as the club “strives to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.”
The club assured fans of bringing stability to the current managerial situation, adding that “ the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
Calum McFarlane previously took charge of the first team earlier in the 2025/26 season after the departure of Enzo Maresca in January and led the team in senior matches, including a 1–1 draw against Manchester City and a defeat to Fulham, with the spell just lasting days.
The interim manager’s first test as the boss will be Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Leeds United at Wembley Stadium, with the club also dealing with an ongoing injury crisis with key players.
