The Federal Road Safety Corps has handed over N101,170 and a motorcycle, recovered from the scene of a hit-and-run crash, to the victims’ families in Ondo.

Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC state sector commander, handed over the recovered items to the deceased’s families on Friday in Akure.

The sector commander said the handover was part of the corps’ commitment to integrity and transparency, ensuring that the victims’ families received the items recovered at the accident scene.

Mr Samuel explained that the crash occurred on January 5 at about 5:40 a.m. along Ijoka Road in Akure and involved a tipper and a bike, which resulted in the death of the rider and his passenger.

“Our team of rescuers visited the place and took the victims to the morgue at the state hospital, and at the scene, a bike was recovered and the sum of N101,170 from the pillion.

“Today, we are handing over the bike to the brother and wife of the bike rider and the money recovered to the children of the pillion, who died in the crash. So, the handover was to show the whole world, and the nation at large, the corps’ transparency, integrity, passion and empathy for the motoring public.

“As the FRSC, we are there to protect lives and properties and ensure even a pin recovered at the scene of a crash will not be missing but intact,” he said.

Mr Samuel also called on motorists, especially those driving articulated vehicles, to be patient on the road, be empathetic to other road users, care for their vehicles, and drive to save lives.

“Consideration of other road users is very necessary on our roads, and we shouldn’t use our own activities to destroy other lives. Those riding bikes and tricycles should avoid driving at night and should let the day break before embarking on any journey,” he said.

Responding, Aderonke Akinyike, a daughter of the deceased pillion, commended the FRSC for its transparency throughout the recovery and handover of the money.

“My mother was going to the market on the fateful day she had an accident, and the money she had on her was N101,170. The money has been given to me and my sister, Joy, intact on behalf of the family. So, I commend the FRSC for this. I say a big thank you to the road safety, and they should continue the good job,” she said.

Also, Niyi Akinnajo, an elder brother to the deceased bike man, and Akinlade Funke, his wife, applauded the FRSC, saying the bike was given to the family “without paying a dime to the command”.
