Edible oil tanker drivers suspend planned strike
The National Union of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers of Nigeria (NUEOTDN) has suspended its planned industrial action scheduled to commence on September 23.
NUEOTDN President Ilias Aperun announced the suspension in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
Mr Aperun said the decision followed interventions by the federal government and the State Security Service (SSS).
He said the interventions aimed to find a lasting resolution to issues affecting members’ public health and safety and to protect stakeholders’ interests in the edible oil industry.
The president said discussions and efforts to resolve the issues were ongoing.
He said the union decided to suspend the action in the interest of peace, national economic stability, and protecting the edible oil supply chain.
Mr Aperun directed all members and stakeholders to suspend any planned industrial action and maintain peace and normal operations pending further communication from the union.
“NUEOTDN remains committed to the protection of public health, welfare and legitimate interests of its comrades, while also supporting a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the issues at stake,” he said.
Mr Aperun appreciated the federal government for its intervention and urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the ongoing process.
He said further updates would be communicated to the public as developments arose.
