Man, 27, arraigned over alleged membership of unlawful society

A 27-year-old man, Adam Ayeni, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged membership of unlawful society.
The defendant who resides at Sito Yamaha Seme, is standing trial before the Magistrate, Mr Lateef Owolabi, on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant conspired with others now at large, to commit the offences sometime in 2024 at the Seme area of Lagos.
She alleged that the defendant belonged to the “Aiye Confraternity,” a group proscribed by Law adding that he also carried out unlawful activities of the group.
The offences contravene the provisions of section 2(3) of the Unlawful Society (Prohibition) and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021
It also contravenes the provisions of sections 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case until June 18, for hearing
Conspiracy to commit a felony attracts a term of two years imprisonment .
Meanwhile, membership of an unlawful society carries a penalty of up to 21 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
