IMF chief commends Ethiopia’s economic progress amid global challenges

Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, has praised Ethiopia’s economic progress amid global challenges.
Ms Georgieva, who is currently visiting the East African country, met with the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and exchanged views on economic progress, partnership, and shared priorities, Abiy said in a social media post.
The IMF chief commended Ethiopia for making strong progress in its ambitious economic reform efforts despite ongoing global economic pressures, including the impact of the Middle East conflict.
“At a difficult time, Ethiopia is making impressive progress on an ambitious economic reform programme,” Ms Georgieva said on X.
She stressed that the East African country is entering this shock in a stronger position thanks to its ongoing reforms.
Ms Georgieva further reaffirmed the IMF’s “strong support” for the country’s reform efforts and overall commitment to Ethiopia and the region.
She said Ethiopia recorded robust economic growth over the past year, while export earnings and domestic revenues exceeded expectations.
She added that these achievements reflect the government’s determination to implement bold reforms despite a difficult global environment.
